COMMONERS VOICES

Student Project

Dear commoners,
in April 2018. inspired by practices of new ethnographic methodology during the class: "Methodology: Research, experiment, writing" at the Department for Anthropology and Ethnology in Zadar an idea for an experimental student project was born. Zadar is a beautiful city with a rich historical background. Located on the Croatian coast it is no wonder that on the example of this city we can witness a strong process of touristification. This process is strongly problematic not just because it is reduced to renting of apartments and selling food and beverages, but also because of the fact that the city is at the same time a student city. The students consequently often face problems with accommodation and are systematically forced to work outside their fields of study, although they could be the leading force of creative development and a new touristic paradigm (opposed to the current one). It seems as if the city is some sort of beautiful but sterile museum artifact, the rich cultural heritage is a thing of the past under glass bells. But how about cultural heritage as something alive, organic, interactive? How do we relate to it at this moment, how does it change, what are the myths of nowness (present), how does it affect us?  In an effort to create a coping strategy for previously mentioned problems the project: "Podanci" was conceived to promote the visibility of cultural heritage sights through an interactive approach using mobile technologies. The prototype was launched a few days ago with the total cost of the project being 30kn/cca. 5eur which the author paid from his own pocket to protest the fact that students are systematically discouraged to work and earn a living in their field of study and that they themselves cannot earn from their projects but only existing corporations and institutions. This act does not represent the opinion of other collaborators but only the very personal stand on the issue. This is how it looks like now.

The anonymously gathered feedback from the visitors is used as a Corpus for a digital monography of affective ethnography. The changing but simple questions posed in the google forms doc, represent a new focus of fieldwork and attempt to deconstruct the opposition tourist/local.

Interesting project -- it would be nice to see the feedback from the visitors and read the collective narrative they have been writing -- on this perspective it reminds me of https://commonfare.net/en/stories/gender-story-2-you-are-a-female-developer

This is a really great project. Why don't you crowdfund to scale up?

@mufasa that is a really good question :) I was thinking of an IndieGoGo campaign but I never did it before so I hesitate. First of all, the issue with visibility is complex considering the strict regulations in regards to cultural heritage sights. Second, I have problems making financial plans. At this moment I believe it is crucial to get Input. After I have a rich corpus than I can create an appealing "teaser" and ask for finance to gather a team which would create a digital repository... @CommonADA I'm really glad you find the project interesting. The story it reminds you of grasped my attention (I have to give it some coins :) ) and I already shared it with my colleagues at the university who found it very inspiring. Too bad, they are overwhelmed with exams so they don't give any feedback. Anyway I got one really nice comment I can share...the other ones are mostly "Trolls" :P... Narrative feedback "The place seems to have a long history connected with many people that would not be apparent from a glance. This project provides different perspectives as well as gives the place a deeper meaning. When looked at from the perspective of Anthropology of Space and Place, this project transforms this space into a place."
